The Basque Borderlands Tour 2026 - Deposit

from $1,000.00

Join us on a new Anza Expedition to his ancestral homeland in the Basque Country!

El País Vasco is the fascinating region from which the early settlers of Sonora and Arizona originated during the Spanish colonial era. With the 250th anniversary of the Anza expedition (1775-1776), the purpose of this trip is to link those cultural and historical ties from the Sonoran Desert back to the Basque region.

We will rendezvous in Madrid and then head north, stopping in Burgos, with its Castillian past. From there, we will enter the Basque region at the base of the Pyrenees and its aquamarine Bay of Biscay border.

The itinerary incorporates visits to the key cities of Bilbao, San Sebastián, Hernani (the ancestral homeland of the Anza family, the leader and pathfinder of the expedition to found San Francisco, California), and Pamplona.

You’ll be delighted by the sweeping geography and marine climate, enjoy world-famous Basque cuisine on tapas crawls, and explore cultural sites like the Burgos Cathedral, the Sanctuary of Arantzazu, the Basque Ship Building Heritage Center, and the Guggenheim Museum.

Don’t miss out on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
